Dorothy Mae (Chaney) Cockrum, 89, of Perry, Oklahoma, was born on June 23, 1920 in Abilene, Texas to William and Beulah “Dinah”(Martin) Chaney. She died Saturday, January 16, 2010 in the Perry Memorial Hospital. Dorothy graduated as the Queen of Elmdale School in Abilene, Texas. She married Alvin Christian Cockrum on April 26, 1941 in Abilene, Texas. They relocated to Perry where they started their family. She was a very active member of the Perry First Baptist Church. She taught youth classes, sang in the choir, and was active in WMU. She was a wonderful, loving wife and mother. “Granny Dot,” the Purple Lady will be greatly missed by everyone who had the joy of knowing her sweet spirit. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 18, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Perry. Rev. Bob E. Lee will officiate. Services are under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Falls Creek Building Fund in care of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home, 1010 N. 7th, Perry, Oklahoma 73077. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Alvin C. Cockrum, of Perry, Oklahoma; one son, Randy Cockrum and wife Sandy, of Perry, Oklahoma; one daughter, Candye (Cockrum) Chavez, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one daughter-in-law, Earline Cockrum, of Crowley, Texas; six grandchildren, Paul Cockrum and wife Shelly, of Crowley, Texas, April Marie (Cockrum) Sewell and husband Cody, of Perry, Oklahoma, Emerald (Cockrum) Groom and husband Mike, of Edmond, Oklahoma, Bryan Christian Chavez, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Sheila Kaye (Cockrum) Presley, of Oklahoma City, Shelly (Cockrum) Johnson and husband Eddie, of Virginia Beach, Virginia; and nine great-grandchildren, Leah Presley, Jacob Presley, Dustin Johnson, Zane Johnson, Kassandra Johnson, Carley Cockrum, Clay Cockrum, Curt Cockrum, Skylar Sewell. She was preceded in death by her son, Chris Cockrum; great-grandson, Clint Lynn Sewell; parents, William and Dinah Chaney; sisters, Doris Downs and Mel Peed.
